Spirit, Technique, and Physical Strength — 心技体 (Shin-Gi-Tai)

Model Number: C001-502
Sale price£100.00 GBP Regular price£112.00 GBP

This Japanese calligraphy scroll features the revered phrase 心技体 (Shin-Gi-Tai) — the foundational concept behind all traditional Japanese martial arts, including Judo, Karate, Aikido, and more.

心技体 literally translates to “Spirit, Technique, and Physical Strength”, and represents the ideal balance every martial artist strives for. Mastery in martial arts is not just about physical ability or technical skill — it is about cultivating the mind, honing technique, and strengthening the body as one unified path.

心 (Shin) – Spirit
The mental strength, discipline, and resolve to stay calm, focused, and courageous in the face of challenge.

技 (Gi) – Technique
The mastery of precise movement, timing, and form developed through continuous, intentional practice.

体 (Tai) – Physical Strength
The power, endurance, and agility required to perform and withstand the demands of martial arts.

This timeless philosophy speaks to all martial artists, especially those who train in Judo, where the harmony of mind, skill, and body is essential. Displaying this calligraphy in your dojo or home is a reminder to pursue not just victory — but balance, discipline, and inner strength.

They don’t teach this at most gyms

If you're a fighter outside Japan, you might not know Shin Gi Tai. But you should. It's the heart of real martial arts. Glad I found this scroll. Now it watches over my training.

Judo spirit, every day

I live in France, and even here the idea of Shin Gi Tai is well known among judoka. This was my first time seeing it written in Japanese calligraphy. Now that it’s on my wall, I feel like the spirit of Judo sinks in a little more every day. It brings me real happiness. Beautiful work.

Now I understand Shin Gi Tai

I'm originally from Canada and have been living in Japan for 8 years. I train Karate at a local dojo, and I was honestly shocked at how different the practice is here. Japanese martial arts go so much deeper. It’s not just technique. You could sum it all up with "Shin Gi Tai". This scroll captures that perfectly. If you buy one, make sure to place it somewhere away from direct sunlight.

Same as my dojo’s scroll

This hangs in our dojo, and our sensei often talks about Shin Gi Tai. When I saw the exact same piece here, I knew I had to get one. Now it’s in my room.

Not just for Judo.

In Japan, "Shin Gi Tai" is respected in every sport. As a judoka, I love seeing it in this form. Feels honest.
